- Update: Crypto Glossary (239K)
- Bug Fix:
Active Boolean Function
Nonlinearity Measurement in JavaScript A leading "0"
caused numeric strings to be interpreted as base 8 by "parseInt()".
While not a problem for the base-2 bit-string used in
nonlinearity measurement, this was a problem for general
FWT use. Now fixed, it implies that values can be input in hex
(0..9,A..F) or (0..9,a..f) with a leading "0x" (or "-0x" if
negative).

- Moved the Cryptography is War!
topic off of the main page, and added a pointer to my comments
to the "resolving-security mailing list."
- Added more topics to the
Research Topics and
Comments section. This has turned out to be a lot more
work than I hand planned. My intent was to try and reduce the
gap between the real cryptography (in the references),
and what most professionals who have something else to do
can possibly afford spend time on. I had thought to summarize
the articles so that a reader without access would not also
be without knowledge, but it turns out to be pretty tough to
pare your average crypto reference down to an easy-reading
paragraph or two. So now I just collect the important
references in one place, giving a brief summary of each, to
perhaps indicate which ones are worth tracking down.
As always, comments are welcome, as are suggestions for other
references, or re-consideration or better exposition of the
current ones.

- Updated speed and strength graphs to include DES, Triple-DES and
give values for P90. A new version of DES does especially well
because of optimized assembly-language code. The other ciphers
are unchanged, except for the P90 environment. The DES structures
generally fit in the processor, whereas the larger state structures
in the other ciphers will not. I consider this to be an interesting
indication of strength in the other ciphers. Cloak2, especially,
improves much less on the P90 than Penknife or DES. But Cloak2 has
far more randomized state used in ciphering, all of which must be
reconstructed to fully break the cipher.
- Some re-editing of the top page.
1995-10-13

- Added top-page cipher strength and speed graphs.
- Edited top-page toward user-solution orientation.
